Cubic feet to cubic yards

A yard is three feet long. A cube one yard on each side is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to obtain cubic yards: 32 cubic feet is about 1.185 cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by 27 for the reverse conversion.

Cubic inches to cubic feet

A foot is 12 inches long, so one cubic foot contains 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches. A box measuring 24 × 12 × 12 inches holds 3,456 cubic inches, or 2 cubic feet. Divide by 1,728 only when all three input dimensions are in inches.

Liters and cubic meters

One cubic meter is 1,000 liters. One cubic foot is 28.316846592 liters; one cubic yard is 764.554857984 liters. These conversion factors come from the international foot of exactly 0.3048 meters. The calculator retains precision internally and rounds the displayed answer.

Keep length units consistent

For an 8 × 4 foot bed filled 12 inches deep, change the depth to 1 foot before multiplying: 8 × 4 × 1 = 32 cubic feet. Multiplying 8 × 4 × 12 without converting would overestimate the volume by a factor of twelve. Choose one length unit per calculator form.

Do not substitute pounds for volume

A pound is a unit of mass, while a cubic foot is a unit of volume. Product density and moisture are needed to connect them. Nursery trade gallons and pot size labels can also differ from measured usable capacity; use physical dimensions or a manufacturer’s stated volume when planning potting mix.

Frequently asked questions

Does one cubic yard equal three cubic feet?

No. It equals 27 cubic feet because all three dimensions are multiplied.

Does switching units change my physical estimate?

No. Measurement and volume fields are converted; the price is not an exchange-rate conversion.
